The Jump, Dallas 1982
Dallas Texas, 1982. This was early in Ed’s relationship with my sister Valerie. It was towards the end of the southern leg of the massive "Hide Your Sheep" tour. All 80 of its US dates were sold out! Van Halen was playing Dallas, and I had pit access right at the stage — the kind of position you don’t take for granted. I had my camera up when Ed launched into one of his jumps, and I caught him at the peak of it. Shot on 35mm Tri-X. Black and white.
This image is offered in two formats.
The wide (horizontal) version gives you the full stage — the way I experienced it standing in that pit. Ed in the air, Michael Anthony visible in the background, the whole production spread out behind him. That sense of scale is part of what makes this shot. You feel a sense of place, like you are right there with me.
The vertical crop brings you in close. Ed’s face, the intensity of the moment, the dynamics of the jump itself. Less about the spectacle, more about the man and what he brought to that stage every night.
Two ways to see the same moment. You choose which one fits best on your wall. Beautifully printed in black and white on Canson Platine fiber rag paper. Limited edition of 500 covering both formats. Certificate of Authenticity, signed and numbered. Tiered pricing is applied to this edition.
Horizontal photo has image size of 14x21 on 18x24 paper.
Vertical image has image size of 17x20 on 20x24 paper.
